On Nature versus Nurture

We are back again at the unanswered question if we are born good or evil, or we just become so. There are some theories, based on scientific research on it, based on what they learned from people that did horrible things to other people, and in the end, they did not show any remorse or regret for what they did. There is an abundance of examples out there, starting from petty crimes to serious serial killers. What pushed those people to do what they did? They tortured and killed people in the most horrible ways, they did things that are beyond mine and your imagination, and just thinking of them makes your spirit shiver. Yes many of them were victims themselves, and suffered a great deal when they were little, made do things that no human being should be forced to do, pushed into a situation where they thought that killing themselves would be the better option. Were they the only ones that, went through that ordeal? No, they were not. We hear horror stories about war crimes and children being forced into slavery and made do things they do not want to do. Did all of them turned out to be monsters growing up? No, they did not. They grew beyond that, healed their scares, and moved on as best as they could, they turned up to be amazing people that helped others that went through the same things that they did, helped them heal their wounds, and make their lives better. So why does this happen to some of them? Why do some become such unimaginable monsters that cause a lot more pain than they ever had to endure? Probably because that is how they were born, probably because even if they would have had a normal and healthy childhood they would have turned up the same. This of course cannot be proved mathematically, and that is why the only thing we can do is just reflect on it. Do those people have a choice on what they become, and what they do? I think not, I think it is like a pre-destination, they are who they are and they accept their nature, even though many will shift the blame to something else, the devil made me do it, my parents were cruel to me, society treated me badly and this was the outcome. The fact is that this is the world we all have to deal with; this is the society where we have to grow up and eventually become something in it. To some it comes naturally to be good to others, to be the helpers, to some it comes naturally to be apathetic, just mind their own business and let the world burn if it has to. And to the last ones, it comes naturally to be violent, to cause pain in order to gain some sense of control and power. Yes maybe they were deprived of that since they were little, but it is our duty as human beings to grow beyond that, to eradicate the need for control and power and just be human. Control is just an illusion, which many are unwilling to let go of, and that causes us to grow angry, of course, the world around us does not behave the way it suits us better, the world around us will keep spinning even after we are long gone, so what gives us the right to believe that it owes us something? We are just passerby-s and nothing else, we come from dust and will return to it, some will leave some traces in time, some will be just like they never were. So who’s to blame? The predator that will do anything to satisfy its hunger, or the pray that by nature is just that, pray.
